This is a very common condition in young males and usually asymptomatic. Commonly seen during puberty. WHAT ARE THE CAUSES? Gynecomastia commonly occurs due to hormonal imbalance. Estrogen is the hormone which causes breast tissue to grow. Though men produce small quantities of estrogen , they have higher levels of testosterone . when there is an imbalance between these two hormones, the male breast tends to grow. Obesity can also cause this condition as it can increase the levels of estrogen. New born babies can also have due to estrogen from mother. During puberty hormone levels may vary and produce enlarged breasts. But it usually clears up once the hormones stabilise. It is also common during old age as the testosterone levels drop. Other rare causes include Liver disorder, certain medications, anabolic steroids, klinefilter syndrome etc. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Gynecomastia most commonly presents as a painless swelling. It is usually bilateral. Need for treatment is mainly for cosmetic reasons. Inability to undress in front of others, wear t-shirts, go for swimming are the common complaints. Sometimes they present with low self esteem, decreased confidence and in severe cases depression. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT? Gynecomastia is a benign condition and the only reason for correction is for cosmetic purpose. It can be easily corrected by a simple day care procedure which involves liposuction of the chest along with gland excision. It is usually done under general anesthesia.
